This upcoming summer, Purchase will be offering a wonderful learning opportunity for young actors as part of its Youth & Precollege Programs. The program will be lead by Denise Bessette, cofounder and artistic producer of the Hudson Stage Company, as well as New York-based actress Jane Beller who will be serving as acting instructor. In addition to learning fundamental acting techniques, styles, and skills, students will have the opportunity to experiement with the building blocks of performance through daily classes in improvisation, monologues, and scenes, with the final goal of a performance at the end of the program. To broaden skills and exposure to the arts, Young Actors can be combined with a variety of other programs as well. Click here for more information.

Dave Gluck and Robert Thompson have collaborated with former New York Yankee Bernie Williams on a book titled, “Rhythms of the Game.” The book shows the link between music and athletics. Williams is an established musician who has worked on albums here at Purchase College, in addition to being a beloved Yankee.
This Monday, August 1st from 1:30 to 2pm in the Choral Hall, Dave and Bob will be talking with students all about the ideas inside of the book. They’ll discuss overcoming defeat, dealing with failure, and how to achieve your goals. This is an event you won’t want to miss, and will surely be a rewarding experience!
Read the official book synopsis:
Bernie Williams’ ability to play major league baseball at a high level was directly influenced by his musical training and his deep understanding of the similarities between musical artistry and athletic performance. Through a series of conversations, narratives, and sidebars, the authors (Bernie Williams, Dave Gluck, and Bob Thompson) discover and reveal the influence of music and its rhythms on the game of baseball. Readers of Rhythms of the Game will gain an insight into the similarities between musical artistry and athletic performance. The book is written for musicians and athletes looking to improve their level of performance on the stage or on the field, as well as for a general audience interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the underlying influence of music on the game of baseball.
For any of our Youth and Precollege students and families looking for something to do in the Fall and Winter, the Emelin Theater may be a great option to fill your arts needs. They have plenty of family shows going on, and you can see the list by clicking here. The theater is located right in Mamaroneck, and is the oldest performing arts theater in Westchester. It has a great reputation, so you might want to check it out!
And as always, there will be a bunch of different events going on at the Purchase College Performing Arts Center, right here on campus. Tickets start going on sale August 9th for events, and the calendar is up now for the 2011-2012 season. The Neuberger Museum of Art is always open as well, where you can see great collections of American and African art. As a bonus, the fall foliage on the Purchase Campus looks amazing!
The Youth & Precollege Summer Programs may be over soon, but you can continue your love of the arts here in Westchester throughout Fall & Winter!
